A Street Dance Experience
5:00 PM - Millar Lodge

TBD
8:30 PM
Contact Improvisation
8:30 PM Contact Improvisation - Guided
9:45 PM Contact Improvisation - Jam
Millar Lodge
Contact Improvisation brings together apparent opposites. We focus our attention on the fundamental physics of moving with another body: friction, weight, leverage, momentum. This objectification brings us closer to the deeply subjective felt-sense of play and possibility. We trust our partner completely, engaging in "risky" flying and falling, yet we can only release into this experience with a strong commitment to self-reliance. We move through physical orientations that, outside of CI, would indicate intimacy or confrontation, yet we witness these experiences come and go through the lens of research. We are able to research how we want to feel in relationship.
Class: In this beginner-friendly class, we will ease into contact through a series of exercises that bring our attention to sensing these basic physics of moving together, without worrying about what it looks like. We will learn basic social skills to enter and exit duets and finally bring our awareness to the larger ensemble, normalizing being witnessed in our secret/public, inner/outer, mind/body, self/other dance.
Jam: The CI Jam is a place for us to practice deconditioning our socialization around movement while we place our attention on the physics of how bodies relate in space, time, and gravity. We all come in with habits and expectations, plus we may be bringing in from various other movement traditions. Under the rather open umbrella of improvisation, we will practice attunement, presence, and play without any lead/follow relationship, frame, or footwork. All are welcome, but those new to CI are encouraged to attend class first.

"Go with the Flow" Poetry Gathering + Reading
10:30 AM - Dining Hall (at outside tables)
“Flow state” describes a condition of deep focus where body, mind, and creativity align, and time seems to disappear as one creates. Near the close of a full weekend at the festival, this gathering offers space to cultivate reflective habits that support a sustainable, mindful creative practice. Through poetry, we’ll consider a question we all have asked ourselves: How do I continue to be creative while easing pressure on myself?
The key to this is building an intentional generative process that works for the individual and done at their own pace. We will learn from poets who developed unique methods to create. We will try our hand at various generative techniques that inspire us to keep creating art in spite of our lives' chaotic or uncertain moments. Participants will also define a tailored framework for their own creative process followed by a writing exercise.
Paper and writing utensils will be available, but participants may also bring personal journals, tablets, etc. The gathering will conclude with a short open mic. Readers will sign up at the session and will have a few minutes each to share their work (from the sessions or elsewhere). All are welcome; no prior experience needed.
